Great auricular nerve: anatomy and imaging in a case of perineural tumor spread.

We present the imaging and clinical findings of a case of recurrent cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the face in which CT and MR imaging revealed perineural tumor spread along the great auricular nerve. The great auricular nerve is a superficial cutaneous branch of the cervical plexus, providing sensory innervation to the skin of the parotid and periauricular region. Our purpose was to fami...

Imaging of perineural tumor spread in head and neck cancer.

Perineural spread (PNS) of head and neck tumors is a well-described phenomenon whereby a lesion can migrate away from the primary site along the neural sheath. By this mechanism, tumor can spread a considerable distance and compromise vital neurologic structures, with significant impact on treatment and prognosis. It is crucial that radiologists search for PNS whenever imaging the head and neck...

Contrast-enhanced MR of the facial nerve in patients with posttraumatic peripheral facial nerve palsy.

PURPOSE To estimate the value of noncontrast and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR imaging in detecting the underlying mechanisms of injury and regeneration in immediate- or delayed-onset posttraumatic peripheral facial nerve palsy. METHODS Twenty-four patients with posttraumatic peripheral facial nerve palsy were examined on a 1.5-T MR imaging unit with precontrast and postcontrast T1-weighte...

Granular cell tumor of the palate: a case report.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an infrequent benign neoplasm, which Abrikosoff accurately described in 1926. GCT probably has a neural crest cell origin. We present the clinical and imaging findings in a 45-year-old woman with a GCT involving the palate. CT and MR imaging revealed perineural tumor spread along the greater and lesser palatine nerves. We emphasize the peculiarity of the palatine lo...

Perineural Tumor Spread Involving the Trigeminal and Facial Nerves: A Review of Critical Imaging Findings

Perineural spread (PNS) represents tumor dissemination along a nerve and is seen in 2-5% of head and neck cancers with trigeminal nerve (CN V) and the facial nerve (CN VII) involvement being most common. PNS has significant prognostic and therapeutic implications and is a well-known mechanism of head and neck cancer dissemination that has been adequately described in the literature but is too o...
